Day 1 - Rome
Arrive in Rome. In the evening, after we’ve checked in, our guide takes us on a tour of the Campus Martius, including the Pantheon, Temple of Hadrian and Piazza Navona.
Day 2 - Rome
We start at the Colosseum and enjoy its interiors, which once held 50,000 spectators, before seeing the Arch of Constantine. In the afternoon, we will visit the imperial palaces on the Palatine as well as the magnificent Roman Forum and Imperial Fora.
Day 3 - Rome
We start with a private visit to the little-known Porta Asinaria, an imposing 3rd century gateway, complete with massive ballista towers and guardrooms. Next, we continue to the excavations under the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran. A short walk takes us to the Porta Maggiore, for the important remains of two aqueducts and the wonderful Tomb of Eurysaces the baker. We end the day with a visit to another Papal Basilica, Santa Maria Maggiore, and its excavations.
Day 4 - Rome
Today we explore sites outside the city, starting with a visit to the Catacombs of St. Sebastian and on to the Circus of Maxentius. Finally, we venture down the Appian Way to see the impressive tomb of Caecilia Metella and the Villa Capo di Bove.
Day 5 - Rome
It’s our final day and we explore the fabulous Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel before our tour comes to an end.
