Summary

This beautiful Mediterranean destination may be the most populous and well-trodden of the Greek islands, but Crete still has secrets, surprises and hidden sites waiting to be uncovered. As we journey through the Cretan landscape, we witness it unfold in a wonderfully artistic fashion: beaches, ancient treasures and vibrant cities await. Join us as we explore the famous Minoan Palaces and settlements, trace the fortunes of the island through the Classical Greek and Roman periods, and let local archaeologists bring to life the research that has been undertaken in Western Crete on this fascinating tour.

Special Access

We have the chance to visit the incredible site of Zominthos. Recently discovered in 1982, this two-storey Minoan building is still under excavation. It is speculated to have been a seasonal dwelling in the summer months when flocks of sheep were taken to higher levels of grazing. The building was occupied until 1600 BC, when it was impacted by an earthquake and left abandoned, however, it remained unusually well-preserved.

Tour highlights:

  • Explore the beautiful Mediterranean island of Crete and its lesser-known archaeological remains
  • Wander through Armeni, where 200 chamber tombs with more than 500 skeletons have been discovered
  • Discover more about the important recent research which has been undertaken in Western Crete during special talks from local archaeologists during our tour
  • Enjoy a guided tour of the ongoing excavations at Zominthos led by one of the excavators
