Discover Roman Remains and the history of Emperor Diocletian

Explore the spectacular archaeology of Croatia set against the backdrop of the breathtakingly beautiful Adriatic. Part of the Ilyrian kingdom, the region succumbed to Roman rule around 32 BC and ‘Dalmatia’ acquired the characteristic trappings of a Roman province:  military camps, towns, towns and roads. The province furnished Rome with emperors, including Diocletian, who famously returned in retirement and built the magnificent palace at Split.

We travel along the narrow coast, backed for most of its length by magnificent mountains, and discover how the sea plays a major role in the political and cultural history of Croatia, while the mountains form a barrier that to a large extent hinders communication with the hinterland.

Tour highlights:

  • Travel down the Dalmatian coast, viewing Roman cities, red-roofed walled medieval towns and the sparkling clear blue waters of the Adriatic
  • See the remarkable Roman remains in Pula and Zadar as well as their amazing museum collections
  • See the palace of the Emperor Diocletian, an entire building that then became medieval Split
