Summary

When Constantine legalised Christianity in AD 313, he began the slow transformation of Rome from an Imperial City to the seat of the Holy See. This tour explores this remarkable change by exploring the world of late antiquity, as seen in the houses underneath the Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo and the little visited late antique monuments in the Roman forum, such as the Temple of Romulus and the glorious Santa Maria Antiqua, as well as its last pagan monument, the Portico of the Dii Consentes. We will also be exploring monuments, such as the Catacomb of Domitilla and the Hypogea of Vibia which show how the evolution from paganism and Christianity was gradual and complex. This tour not only explores the transformation of this city but glories in the artistic splendours of early churches, from the less well-known Santa Prassede and San Crisogono to the magnificent Papal Basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Giovanni in Laterano.

Tour highlights:

  • Visit the incredible excavations underneath St. Peter preserving an ancient necropolis
  • Enjoy private visits to the extraordinary Hypogeum at Via Livenza
  • View stunning Paleo-Christian art hidden under the churches of San Crisogono and Santa Cecilia
