Rome is a city of monumental buildings, tall apartment blocks and narrow winding streets, relieved only by the occasional public spaces and kept moving by the great highways and a port of entry on the coast. This is modern Rome, but the words are just as true of the ancient metropolis, seat of empire and mistress of the world, from fog-bound northern Britain to the gritty Syrian Desert.
Such a city has a thousand stories hidden in its teeming streets and during this special tour we will be guided by Lindsey Davis, whose novels of the investigators Marcus Didius Falco and Flavia Albia have brought the city to life in all its glorious and nefarious splendour. Join us as we follow in Falco’s footsteps, visiting palaces, slums, ports and country estates as we trace the unforgettable tale of ancient Rome.

Day 2 - Forum Boarium
After breakfast, we walk to the Forum Boarium, taking in the Insula dell’Ara Coeli by the Vittoriano en route. From here, we explore the Theatre of Marcellus, the Temples of Hercules Victor and Portunus, and the Ponte Rotto. There will be a coffee break late morning and then we move on to the ancient Statio Annonae, where the dole was distributed in antiquity, which is now the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. We then walk to the Circus Maximus, and finally have private access to the Mithraeum underneath the Circus. In the afternoon, we walk to the Aventine via the Clivus Publicius and then visit the Basilica of Santa Sabina, where we will explore the rarely seen excavations underneath the basilica. On the Aventine, Lindsey will talk about the bustling hill which was home to Falco and Flavia Albia. Later, we walk to the Piazza dei Cavaglieri di Malta, to look through Piranesi’s Keyhole.
Day 3 - Castel Gandolfo
Our day begins with a drive to the Pontifical Villas at Castel Gandolfo, where we will be exploring the remains of the once sumptuous Villa of Domitian, which are now in the Barberini Gardens. After lunch, we move to the more rustic remains of Horace’s Sabine Villa in Licenza, made famous by his poetry.
Day 4 - Piazza Navona
Today we will take a short walk to the Palazzo Valentini, where we will explore the extraordinary remains of luxurious senatorial domus. We then walk to the Pantheon where we explore this unique temple which still boasts has the largest un reinforced concrete dome. We continue to Piazza Navona, once Domitian’s Stadium, where we will consider the emperor, whom Lindsey Davis wrote about in Master and God. We end the morning with a visit to the Gladiator’s Museum. The afternoon is yours to enjoy as you see fit. Why not go to Trajan’s Markets or the Ara Pacis, or simply enjoy an aperitivo ahead of dinner.
Day 5 - Nero's Golden House
This morning we walk to one of the highlights of the tour, namely the Domus Aurea, Nero’s Golden House. After a quick stop for coffee, we walk to the Caelian Hill hunting for further traces of the Domus Aurea, which covered four of Rome’s seven hills. These remains include the podium where Nero placed a colossal statue of himself, as well as Nero’s Nymphaeum. We will continue by visiting the apartment blocks on the Caelian Hill, buried underneath the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. After lunch, we explore the Palatine with Lindsey, where we explore further remnants of the Domus Aurea, before examining the Domus Flavia and Tiberiana. We end the day with a visit to the Forum.
Day 6 - Ostia Antica - London
The final day of our tour is upon us, but we make the most of it with a visit to the archaeological site of Ostia Antica. After our last lunch in glorious Italy, we transfer to the airport and make our way back home to London.
