Explore Pompeii and the breathtaking Amalfi Coast - Good Housekeeping

8 days

From £2,430

Activity Level:

This tour combines the delights of the Amalfi Coast with the archaeological treasures of the Vesuvian towns. Famed for its dramatic setting, the Amalfi coast has wonderful mediaeval remains created when the maritime Republic of Amalfi was at its height. This is a part of the world where Lombards, Saracens and Normans all made their homes and competed with one another. This blend of cultures is most seen in the Arabic-Norman cathedrals of Amalfi and Ravello. This tour also takes you to the wonderful island of Capri, which is famous for its Villa Jovis, a sumptuous palace built in order to provide the emperor a refuge from Rome. Guests will also take you to the spectacular sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in the autumn of AD 79 and today precious witnesses to the ancient world. There has never been a better time to see these Vesuvian towns as new museums and new sites have been opened, including some of the excavations on Regio V. This tour includes visits to the Flavian Amphitheatre in Pozzuoli, one of the largest in the world, as well as a private visit to the Piscina Mirabilis.

Tour highlights:

  • Explore the wonderful cities of Ravello, Positano and Amalfi on the Costiera Amalfitana
  • Visit newly opened sites in Pompeii, including excavations on Regio V
  • Piscina Mirabilis: Visit the largest Roman cistern in Europe on a private tour
  • Boscoreale: We are visiting the newly opened small farm on the site, near the museum of everyday goods
