Summary

A treasure trove of history: Piles, dwellings, castles and abbeys

Lake Constance, bordering 3 countries, is one of the most idyllic places in Europe and also one of the most varied, archaeologically and historically. It is equally known for its unique archaeological remains as it is for its photogenic castles and abbeys, all of which are in picturesque valleys framed by mountain tops and clear blue waters. This tour explores the hugely significant Neolithic and Bronze Age pile dwelling in the museums of Bad Buchenau and Federsee, which exhibit finds from one of the archaeologically richest bogs in Europe. We also visit the UNESCO listed monastic Island of Reichenau, which was an intellectual outpost of the western world in Carolingian and Ottonian periods. We also have the opportunity to spend time at St. Gallen, one of the oldest and richest libraries in the world, which boasts a priceless collection of early medieval writings. In addition, the tour includes some of the region‘s most famous and splendid castles, including the medieval Meersburg Castle, the oldest inhabited fortress in Germany. The Lake truly offers a treasure trove of history and nature which can be enjoyed while soaking in the unspeakably beautiful surroundings in the comfort of our hotel in Constance.

Tour highlights:

  • Explore open air museums at Bad Buchenau and Federsee with its unique Neolithic and Bronze Age Pile Dwellings
  • Enjoy a special wine tasting lunch in the atmospheric Salem monastery
  • Visit St. Gallen library, one of the oldest and richest libraries in the world, with its precious collection of medieval early manuscripts
  • Travel in the company of Esther Unterweger, an underwater archaeologist, who has been working on pile dwellings for UNESCO in Austria
