Summary
Germany's Hanseatic Cities
The Hanseatic League, the German Hanse, was a loose confederation of merchant towns and cities in northern Europe in the Middle Ages. It existed to promote commercial interests and to provide uniformity of action to protect mercantile privileges. Its principal focus was northern Germany and especially the cities of Lübeck (the ‘Queen of the Hanse’), Hamburg and Bremen. The wealth generated by the Hanse was manifest in the built environment of these cities and other towns such as Lüneburg, Stade and Wismar but also in technological development fostered by trade such as the construction of deep-water commercial vessels like the cog. Archaeological work in recent decades has complemented the surviving architectural legacy of the Hanse. This tour explores several Hanseatic urban centres enabling viewing of beautiful ancient towns, surviving monuments and archaeological discoveries, as well as opportunity for discussion with German archaeologists.
