It lies however at the very heart of the Balkans, and has been a byword for a mixture of peoples and civilisations. From the Neolithic era its wide plains, framed by soaring mountains, have formed a highway speeding conquerors, settlers and saints through the Balkans leaving a rich archaeological heritage set in spectacular scenery.

  • Visit the ruins of Stobi, an expansive late-Roman city with a kaleidoscope of mosaic floors
  • Experience wonderful Ohrid on its lake, a Macedonian fortress and Byzantine merchant city
  • Explore the forgotten city of Voskopja, Vlach culture and late Byzantine painted churches
