From coast to mountain: Roman and Medieval Roussillon

Roussillon is a beautiful region of southern France that borders Spain and the Mediterranean Sea, stretching from the coast to the dramatic mountains of the Pyrenees. From the earliest of times its history was inextricably bound with both countries, resulting in a special mix of cultural and archaeological heritage that is only enhanced by the stunning natural backdrops of its varied landscapes.

Iberian settlers were subsumed into Roman Gaul, whose thriving trading cities in turn became centres of medieval commerce. By the 12th century it belonged to the Spanish Kingdom of Aragon but changed hands several times before becoming firmly French in 1659. Here we find a varied palette of superb architecture fed by both Iberian and French traditions. The region hides some of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in remote and stunningly beautiful locations, while from the Middle Ages through to the 17th century the recurrent tussle for supremacy left in its wake palaces, castles and early modern fortresses.

This tour explores the region’s rich heritage, from rare Roman survivals in Narbonne to some of Europe’s most stunning and beautiful Romanesque sites to fortified villages perched amongst remote Pyrenean peaks. We shall also take an excursion through dramatic scenery and over stunning viaducts on the world-famous Train Jaune.

Tour highlights:

  • Coastal cities of Perpignan and Collioure with spectacular palaces and castles
  • Discover the city of Narbonne with its rare Roman sites and impressive medieval buildings
  • Fortified towns set high in the mountains and UNESCO heritage sites of Vauban fortresses
  • Admire superb Romanesque architecture perched on mountain ledges
  • Enjoy an excursion on the world-famous Train Jaune, also known as the Little Yellow Train of the Pyrenees
