Summary

Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, has a rich history forged by millennia of different peoples invading the island and making their mark. Colonised by Dorian Greeks in the Archaic period, Rhodes became a beacon of cultural excellence in the Hellenistic period, when it was allied with Ptolemaic Egypt and became a dominant force in Mediterranean commerce. Apollonius of Rhodes and the sculptor Agesander who crafted the famous Laocoon statue now in the Vatican, as well the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Wonders of the Ancient Rhodes, are products of this island’s cultural briliance in this period. Rhodes came under Roman domination and subsequently Byzantine rule until the 14th century when it famously came under the control of the Knights Hospitaller until they were defeated by the Ottomans in the 16th century. All of these periods of history have left their mark in this tour which explores Greek temples and theatres alongside medieval castles and delightful modern villages.
