Bare Bones Minoans
As a seafaring and trading culture, the Minoans made a significant input into the evolution of our Western European civilization. They developed unique art and architecture, building large palace structures incorporating administrative, trading and religious facilities. The sophistication of the Minoan culture is passed down to us not only through their writing system, but also by their artistic expressions, for instance the most vibrant fresco scenes. So great a culture was it that in its day, legends were told, like the one of Theseus defeating the terrifying Minotaur. Join us on a tour through the most fascinating and famous sites of Minoan Crete, from the world famous Palace of Knossos, Vathypetro’s country house with a shrine and well preserved wine press and wander the halls of the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion housing the most important finds from the island.

Day 2 - Santorini
Our first full day is spent on Santorini. We visit the fabulous site of Akrotiri, buried suddenly during the cataclysmic eruption of Thera. The city is reminiscent of Pompeii, with houses preserved up to three storeys high. Its structures, drainage systems and wall paintings indicate a once prosperous society with wide ranging foreign trade links.
Day 3 - Heraklion
After an orientation walk of the area, we visit Heraklion Archaeological Museum where we see important finds from the island, including the Phaistos Disc and Minoan frescoes. The afternoon is at leisure.
Day 4 - Heraklion
Today we visit the magnificent palace complex of Phaistos and, in contrast, Vathypetro, a Minoan country house where we will see an elaborate local shrine and wonderfully preserved wine press. Our afternoon is devoted to the world renowned Palace of Knossos, a majestic complex erected in Greece’s Bronze Age.
Day 5 - Heraklion
This morning we explore the royal quarters of the third largest Minoan Palace complex, Malia. Later we visit Gournia, walking through the cobbled streets among the ruins of houses and its palace. In the afternoon, we continue to Agios Nikolaos on the shores of Mirabello Bay before going back to Heraklion.
Day 6 - Heraklion
After breakfast, our tour comes to an end.
